Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems

Hyperion Books for Children, 2003

Pigeon may be small, but he has big ideas. He wants to drive a bus more than anything. And it’s up to the reader of this delightful picture book to rein him in. It won’t be easy. Pigeon has lots of reasons why he should get to drive the bus, and will try to trick you, but don’t give in, even if he throws a great big tantrum. The bus driver is counting on you!

Mo Willems has created an engaging and funny picture book that will ring true to preschoolers and their parents. The bus driver and Pigeon talk directly to the reader, encouraging him or her to respond. Kids will love telling him, “NO!” over and over again, and catching him as he tries to trick the reader into letting him drive. While silly and off beat, this book also encourages parents and kids to talk about how it feels to want to do something that just isn’t possible and different ways to express those feelings.

The text and illustrations are deceptively basic. Pigeon’s conversational tone and his expressive face encourage even beginning readers “read” this book on their own or with their favorite grown-up. It’s great fun read aloud, too. Find a preschooler and read it together. And remember: Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus!
