Woodbury Park Read-Aloud Kids in the news

Five kids who participate in the TRC Read-Aloud at Woodbury Park found their names in the Kids Post section of the Washington Post, Feb. 7, 2005. Montice Monroe, Anu Otgonbayar, Jalin Dunn, Genesis Gomez, and Kabani Monroe were all named for correctly answering all 20 questions of the Kids Post end-of-the-year news quiz. They were quizzed on kids books, sports, politics, local news, and current events.

Ronn Levine, TRC's site coordinator at Woodbury Park, says quizzes work well as part of the read aloud. Ronn said: "I love this activity (for the older kids). It challenges them. I look up the answers (they're hard questions!) and then I try to give the kids clues. They are very good and show some good intuitive thinking. This quiz familiarizes them with current events and the newspaper and gives them confidence when they get all the answers right.

Ronn adds a lesson of his own to the quizzes. "I also make them fill out the envelopes, which I think is a very practical lesson," he says.
